Rovaniemi has a subarctic climate that is characterized by with short, comfortable summers and cold and snowy winters. The peak time to visit here is the winter season from December to February. During this time of the year, the Northern Lights are most active and so are all the ice-hotels, snowmobiles and husky tours- and you can top this scintillating experience by attending Christmas and New Year Celebrations. The city is served by Rovaniemi Airport (Finnish name: Rovaniemen lentoasema). It is the country’s fifth biggest airport and it offers both public and military services. Its northern end of runway is intersected by the Arctic Circle. Except for some flights to Helsinki by Finnair and Norwegian Air Shuttle, it mostly offers charter flights from Great Britain and few other European countries from the end of November to mid-January every year. It also offers flights to some seasonal destinations at different points of time through different carriers.

Rovaniemi is the hometown of Santa Claus and capital of Finnish Lapland. It is located close to a village that bears his name and has a fairy-tale like appearance. This city has risen to be the axis of national economy during last 200 years and a glimpse of both its identity and clinical rise can be best viewed in the city’s Arktikum museum. A prominent attraction in the city is the phenomenon of Midnight Sun that happens every year from 6th June to 7th July. This strangeness prevails from April (or May) until mid August and during this time, there are no nights as the sun remains visible even at midnight. At three hours of ride from Rovaniemi lies the winter resort town of Levi. You should visit it for its amazing ice sculptures plus some excellent cross-country skiing.
Santa Claus Village
Opened in 1985, the Santa Claus Village is an amusement park in Rovaniemi. This Santa-themed park is cut through by the Arctic Circle and has a number of attractions for kids. Some of these attractions include small sledding hills, a post office with special stamps, souvenir shops, Christmas cards and CDs. Post the sunset, the village is nicely lit-up by many ice sculptures.
Santa Park
Santa Park is an underground amusement park located close to Santa Claus Village. The park has an underground network of caves inside the hill so as to emulate the cavern residence of Santa Claus on the Arctic Circle. The attractions of Santa Park include Elf Show, Santa's Workshop, Gingerbread Kitchen and Sleigh Ride.
Arktikum
The Arktikum is one of the best museums and science centres in Finland. It is hallmarked by a 172 meter long glass corridor beneath which resides the exhibition chamber. This unique system is representative of the way local animals take cover from the cold winter by burrowing themselves under the snow. This museum is divided into two parts, one deals with the historical and cultural aspect while the other is a representation of the local people and local flora and fauna of the region.
