The peak season to visit Rio de Janeiro is the summer season from December to March. The city is a cute mix of sun, rains, live music and two iconic annual events (Reveillon and Carnival) during this time of the year. It is the country's second-busiest international airport and it shares some of its facilities with the Galeao Air Force Base of the Brazilian Air Force. It connects the city to a number of international destinations like Buenos Aires, Rome, Paris and London. It also offers connectivity to some domestic destinations like Joao Pessoa and Sao Paulo, besides operating seasonal flights to a few international destinations. Major airlines offering flights here include British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa and Emirates among others.
Places of interest in Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city in Brazil and it lies on the South Atlantic coast. This city is characterised by three attributes: its beautiful landscape consisting of sea and mountains, white sandy beaches and the annual Carnival. An impossible to forget experience here is overlooking the city from the top of Corcovado Mountain while standing beneath a 30 metre high mountaintop statue called Cristo Redentor (or Christ the Redeemer). Rio de Janeiro is home to Sugar Loaf Mountain (395 meters), Corcovado Peak (704 meters) and Tijuca hills (1021 meters)- and the trio collectively makes the city’s harbour one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer (built: 1922-31 AD) is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro. Weighing 635 metric tons, this 30 metre tall statue stands on an 8 metre high pedestal with its outstretched arms to 28 metres. It stands atop a 700 metre high Corcovado mountain. This statue is both emblematic of Christianity and the city’s presence on the world map. It was listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
Sugarloaf Mountain
Sugarloaf Mountain is a granite and quartz mountain near Guanabara Bay in Rio de Janeiro. It tops at 396 meters above the city’s harbour and is famous for its 100 year old cableway (that has thrice been renovated ever since) and a stunning cityscape. The trio of Sugarloaf, Morro da Urca and Pao de Acucar mountains forms one of the largest urban climbing areas in the world.
Carnival
Carnival is the most famous annual event and festival celebrated in Brazil. It marks Lent, the 40-day period before Easter amidst a spectacular show of lights, themes, dance, music and flashy costumes amidst an electrifying atmosphere. The last four days of the Carnival leading to Ash Wednesday are an absolute riot of sights and sounds as maximum number of people join-in the musical and dance parades.
